About
To help understand the motives behind Considerate Boater, allow us to provide you with some background.
My name is Steve Vaughan. My family and I are normal everyday people who are fortunate enough to own a narrowboat. We started boating just 15 years ago, which is not exactly long in the history of the waterways, but quickly discovered we had a passion for boating - so much so, that after hiring for several years, we bought a new sailaway from Calcutt Boats, fitted it out ourselves and have truly enjoyed every minute since. Well almost.
Once thing that occasionally diminishes this enjoyment is the inconsiderate conduct of some, (thankfully a minority), of boaters.
We felt this conduct could be put down to either attitude or education. There is probably not much we can do about attitude but we felt we might be able to do something about education, particularly to help newcomers to boating.
So we decided to create "Considerate Boater".
Since the launch in November 2008, we have solicited the support of a large number of hire boat operators and training establishments. Most have placed links from their web sites to ours and many are directing their customers to our web site when they book. The reception has been better than we dared hope and we have received some very nice, (and welcome), praise.
We also have a private supporter list which is growing by the day.
Our motives are simple. This is not a commercial venture and there will not be any business promotion of any kind. The only links to businesses shown on the site will be the Links Page where we list the corporate supporters of the Considerate Boater principles. We just simply want to try to make a difference, no matter how small.
Happy reading and please spread the word wherever you can.
